Will Seattle ever get another NBA team?

In the last few weeks, I've been reading a lot about the possibility of getting an NBA team back to Seattle. But if this means we need an NHL team to make that happen, I don't think it will ever go through.

I do think an NHL team would do good here. I would support a hockey team and go to the games just like I go to the Sounders games, but I just dont see both happening at the same time. Unless I am missing something and we can have an NBA team but not have an NHL team until later?

Will we have an NBA team back in Seattle sometime in the next 5 years? 10 years?

I have been reading that too. What is the source of the rumors I wonder. Speculation or someone leaking something they know?

What part do you consider a rumor? I've been reading about it and watching it on the local news and there seems to be continuous coverage about it. I thought everything about what needed to happen was public since everyone is reporting it.

Rumor might not have been the right word, I guess. I am simply referring to talk that hasn't been officially substantiated.

I think it will be at least 2 years before we can seriously expect to see an NBA or NHL team here. The trick is figuring out where the teams would come from. Our stadium announcement has probably given Sacramento the incentive they need to keep the Kings there (all they need to do is build a new stadium there), and now there seems to be a push to keep the Coyotes in Phoenix which is like, come on, Phoenix doesn't need a hockey team, but still. A lot can happen between now and whenever plans would really solidify.

I think the stadium plan is about as good as it can get, though i would rather have seen something done at Key Arena and have something down there, even if we had to demolish and start over. Or put the NBA team in Renton, then keep the NHL team downtown or in SoDo, i'd be cool with that. My only concern is how it will impact traffic, but really I am more concerned that the NBA team gets to be called the Sonics, and the NHL team is called the Metropolitans (Seattle's old hockey team and the first US team to ever win the Stanley Cup).

The only thing I don't understand about all of this is how the Sacramento Kings NBA team effects Seattle getting another NBA team? Does this mean the Kings might possibly relocate to Seattle? And does Seattle still have rights to the "Sonics" name or would that team be called the Seattle Kings or something entirely new like what the OKC Thunder did?

Yeah, the Kings have been the most likely target for relocation so if they came here we'd essentially be doing to Sacramento what OKC did to us heh. Another target I've heard has been the Hornets since their financial situation isn't all that great either. The Kings want a new stadium, and with the looming prospect of them moving up here, that could be the incentive the city needs to give it to them. So if they get a new stadium then it won't be the Kings moving here. And our stadium deal doesn't happen unless we get both NBA and NHL teams.

As far as the Sonics name goes, that is up in the air because technically Seattle has the rights to use that name if a team ever came back, but the language is very iffy so if Clay Bennett really wanted to be a jerk about it, he could throw a wrench into the plans to use the Sonics name. After all, he did take the Sonics history to OKC with the team, so basically everything the Sonics did in their history, all the players they had are now listed as OKC Thunder players and seasons. That's just messed up.
